Roofing Contractor | Know the basics

Roofing Contractor

When you’re hiring a roofing contractor, you need to know the basics about contracting and how the system works. In an emergency situation, such as after a storm, you may be approached by several contractors who want to provide an estimate to you. If you know how things work, you’ll be able to make the right decision and avoid getting ripped off.

General Contractors

General contractors can provide a wide range of services, but they don’t do the work themselves. Their business is coordinating large jobs where there might be many different types of work going on. If you hire a general contractor to perform your roof replacement or repair, it’s likely that the actual work will be done by a roofing subcontractor that the general contractor hired. There might even be a mark-up on the cost that gets passed along to you.

Subcontractors

Subcontractors usually do a specific type of work (like plumbing, roofing, electrical, etc.) and may be hired by a general contractor to perform a smaller part of a bigger job. Some contractors work as subcontractors and directly for clients. You may wish to hire a roofing contractor directly, and there are many who work directly for homeowners. You will likely be asked to sign a contract before the work is done. Make sure you’re comfortable with the company and the terms before you sign. here are some things to think about, and questions to ask before you choose a contractor:

1. Is the contractor licensed to do the work in your area? Some states and cities require licenses for particular kinds of work. Find out if a license is needed, and if your contractor has one.

2. Is the contractor insured and/ or bonded? You want to make sure that the contractor carries any necessary and appropriate insurance, so your liability is lessened while they’re working on your house. Many contractors also carry bonding, which helps protect you if the work doesn’t get done, or is done incorrectly.

3. Does the contractor have references? You should be able to contact some other parties to find out about the contractor’s work quality

With these things in mind, you should be able to choose an excellent roofing contractor when the time comes.
